You may also select a model available in kit form, and I will build it for you. Model Expo (www.modelexpo-online.com) and Bluejacket Ship Crafters (www.bluejacketinc.com) both carry extensive ranges of kits. These kits basically provide the wood and other parts required, a set of plans and building instructions - a far cry from plastic models where "building" consists of gluing two halves together! Below is a selection of kit models I have built. 1. The Amerigo Vespucci This is the sail training ship of the Italian navy, which visited New York in 1985 when I was starting the model. I spent several hours on board taking numerous photographs, and customized the model in several areas where the kit did not match the real thing.
The model is on loan to the Italian Center in Stamford, CT (www.italiancenter.org) where it can be viewed in the lower lobby. 2. New Bedford Whaleboat
As will be seen in the picture to the right, the display case has a whaleboat and sperm whale etched into it, to show relative sizes. This model is currently on loan to the Norwalk Maritime Aquarium (www.maritimeaquarium.org), where it can be viewed. 3. Grand Banks Schooner Bluenose The Bluenose is the ship pictured on the reverse side of Canadian dime coins. It sailed out of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, from whence its successor Bluenose II still sails.
4. Catspaw Dinghy This is a kit model under construction, started many years ago, and forgotten until recently.
5. Schooner Yacht America This is a model of the yacht that started it all, when in 1851 America beat all comers in a race around the Isle of Wight, to start the America's Cup racing series that still continues to this day. The model is being built from purchased modeler's plans.
